Report: Verizon enables full streaming of DVR content outside the home

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is releasing an upgraded mobile app that enables streaming of all DVR content outside the home, reports media tech blogger David Zatz.

In addition, users of Verizon’s new IMG Software 3.0 app will be able to view live programming — in addition to their DVR recordings — from any channel in their lineup on mobile devices inside the home. Zatz claims to have tested the app on iOS and says it’s supported for Android and Amazon Fire TV devices.

“The new features referenced in the link below are currently rolling out market by market – this should be complete by mid December. They’re available for FiOS Quantum TV customers who have downloaded the FiOS Mobile App,” said Verizon spokesman Raymond McConville to FierceCable

This is a major step forward for pay-TV’s moribund TV Everywhere initiative — legacy versions of Verizon’s FiOS mobile app only let users stream a small subset of their channels.

According to postings from users on DSL Reports message boards, Verizon recently deployed the update in upstate New York. The publication said Verizon hopes to have the upgrade deployed across its FiOS footprint by mid-December.

The app update will be available to FiOS TV customers who have the Quantum TV DVR.

Verizon’s approach isn’t exactly unique in the pay-TV industry. Through its X1 platform, for instance, Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) enables full-channel viewing on the Xfinity TV app within the home. And those with Comcast’s cloud DVR can stream recorded shows both inside and outside the home.
